Haiti, a Republic of Endless Scandals

The country is neither governed nor managed. Each passing day makes the late Professor Monferrier Dorval’s words an absolute truth. After the scandal involving 100 million gourdes, today it is Presidential Council member Smith Augustin who finds himself at the center of a marital scandal.

Indeed, Councilor-President Smith Augustin declared on the program “Le Rendez-vous” on Gazette Haïti, on May 26, 2025, that he is divorced from his wife, Nathalie Saintvil Augustin.

In response, Nathalie denies being in divorce proceedings with the accused Councilor-President, stating that they spent “happy days together” during her visit to Haiti in August 2024. As a result, Smith Augustin has been granted one legal day to formally declare, via bailiff, whether he maintains his statements from May 26, 2025, in which he claimed to be a divorced man.

For decades, Haiti has been “run” by small-minded men with no sense of statehood. Scandal after scandal unfolds while century-old problems remain unresolved.
