L’Asile town hall closed by angry citizens

Date:

On the afternoon of Tuesday 20 April 2021, the doors of L’Asile town hall were padlocked. Citizens from the second communal section, merged with those from the town center, put their words into action. This cartel, elected in the 2017 municipal elections and then re-elected in 2020, allegedly misappropriated a fund allocated to the development of a stretch of road, according to some witnesses.

The town center of the city of hospitality was in turmoil on Tuesday. A group of angry citizens made their way to the town hall and locked the main doors of this institution. According to these citizens, a cheque for one million gourdes was allegedly issued to the Mairie after the last March. Five hundred thousand gourdes had been earmarked for roadworks in Changieux. A month later, they realized that the worksite did not exist, and decided to close the doors of the town hall, demanding that light be shed on the matter.

Having not received their salaries for months, the demands of municipal road workers have been taken into account by these citizens.

A copy of a cheque issued in the name of the town hall is going viral on the networks. According to the instigators of this protest movement, Mr. Matinor Geradin, one of the deputy mayors, has this sum in his hand.

At the same time, Deputy Mayor Epheta Ambroise is washing her hands of the matter.

Mr. Serges Saül, the commune’s principal mayor, is recovering from an illness and is obliged to remain at home.

The protesters are demanding another cartel with new blood, and are urging the Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Collectivities to assume its responsibilities in this matter.
