Crisis in Haiti: trapped human beings

Haiti is experiencing one of the world’s most complex and urgent humanitarian crises, with consequences for regional and international stability, warns Amy Pope, Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, it highlighted the scale of the challenges: 85% of Port-au-Prince, the capital, is under gang control, paralyzing access to aid.

Safety conditions make it almost impossible to deliver assistance.

“It’s no longer safe to enter or leave the capital by road”, she explained on Wednesday, pointing out that even humanitarian aid workers and diplomats have to use helicopters from Cap-Haïtien, an unpredictable and limited means of transport.

With air transport irregular and roads cut off, thousands of lives are at risk, deprived of food, care and protection.

“Behind the numbers are human beings trapped,” insists Amy Pope, calling for international mobilization in the face of this forgotten catastrophe.
