DCPJ investigation: Why is the name of a powerful businessman linked to armed gangs not revealed?

Date:

The investigation report by the Direction Centrale de la Police Judiciaire (Dcpj) failed to reveal the name of a powerful businessman linked to armed gangs in Haiti, raising questions about the integrity of the institution.

Magalie Habitant, former director of the Service métropolitain de collecte des résidus solides, acted as an intermediary between this businessman and the gang leaders, facilitating negotiations in a climate of impunity.

The report calls for the prosecution of Habitant and other accomplices for various crimes, but the absence of this businessman’s name raises doubts about the institution’s independence.

Human rights associations such as Fondasyon je klere (Fjkl) support the prosecution, stressing the need for fair justice.

The report highlights the disturbing connections between Haiti’s economic elites and organized crime.
