USA – Storm Ida: around 20 dead in the northeastern United States

Date:

On Wednesday night, a state of emergency was declared in New York City and surrounding neighborhoods, following waves of torrential rain caused by Storm Ida. New York State and New Jersey were the main victims, with between 9 and 13 deaths reported in Queens, particularly among families living in basement apartments. Authorities reported other victims in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Downpours lashed New York City on Wednesday night as the remnants of the hurricane that struck the southern U.S. and brought tornadoes and historic flooding to the northeast passed through, authorities reported.

As a result, streets, avenues and expressways were suddenly transformed into torrents, in Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester County to the north of the city.
