Haiti – Earthquake: The commune of Saint-Louis du Sud still in dire straits

Following the devastating earthquake of August 14, 2021, in the south of France, the commune of Saint Louis was terribly affected by the damage. According to the partial toll, more than 225 people died, 41 disappeared and 675 were injured. According to the same source, 1,515 houses were damaged, 3,240 severely damaged and 8,905 destroyed. The town’s mayor, Luc Edwin Ceide, was on hand to receive aid and political charity delegations.

Driving along National Route No. 2, the earthquake damage is not so obvious until you reach some of the worst-affected localities.

A few hours after the disaster, journalist Carel Pèdre and his team were already on site to support the victims.

On Wednesday August 25, 2021, when the “Ede jan w kapab” team had just handed over aid to the town’s mayor, who had stored it in a warehouse at the sisters’ home, the mayor invited the team to visit Malval, a locality in the region.

Located in the 3rd communal section of Saint Louis, Malval seems to be the hardest hit. According to local residents, in 2011 Food For the Poor had built nearly 160 houses for the needy. The earthquake took only a few seconds to destroy or damage them. According to Clausel Occemé, head of communications for the commune’s civil protection committee, some 10,000 families have been affected.

Carel Pedre, Stéphanie Douyon, Yendy Cavé and Karl Jean Jeune are the team of volunteer influencers who put their heart and soul into collecting and distributing donations to the victims. Artists such as Shaba and Medgy supported the team in unloading donations.

In an interview with Hebdo 24, Mr. Carel Pèdre reminds us that this is not a project, let alone a foundation or organization. However, the journalist points out that these donations come from some friends and followers who trust them.

With two distribution trips already under his belt, Chokarella’s host would like to thank the companies that have agreed to lower the prices of products for the victims, or to collaborate in their own way.

Finally, this team hopes to carry out a mega-project in one of the worst-affected communes in the South, as soon as activities resume in the country’s southern metropolis.
