Affaire Cheffe Leen Excellent: When ingratitude leads to digital downfall

Date:

Haitian chef Leen Excellent, a rising star of Caribbean gastronomy on social networks, has had her TikTok account, followed by over 800,000 subscribers and accumulating 8.4 million likes, suspended. The suspension follows a controversy sparked by a thank-you video in which she failed to mention Uncle Kendji, considered by many Haitians to be her first supporter.

In her statement, Leen Excellent claimed that Uncle Kendji didn’t deserve all the recognition, pointing out that only her manager, Maxon Gustave, was responsible for her success, including releasing £20,000 (around €22,000) to support her. This statement was seen by many as a lack of gratitude to Uncle Kendji, whose moral support and early promotion were deemed invaluable by the community.

In response, many Internet users expressed their displeasure by unsubscribing en masse and reporting his account, leading to its suspension by TikTok. This incident highlights the expectations of recognition and gratitude within online communities, as well as the potential consequences of public perceptions on the digital presence of content creators.

This case highlights the complexity of relationships between content creators and their communities, where the recognition of initial support is often scrutinized. It also highlights the importance of public image management and fan relations in the digital age.
