Saint-Anne de l’Anse-à-Veau Cathedral was the scene of a solemn ceremony on Wednesday May 26, 2021. Seven (7) transitional deacons were ordained Priests. The sacrament of Holy Orders was conferred on them by the laying on of hands of His Excellency Monseigneur Pierre André Dumas, titular bishop of the diocese.
This liturgical act, which confers the sacrament of Christian priesthood, known as the sacrament of order, is an event taken very seriously by the Catholic Church. The presbyteral ordination of these 7 new priests took place in the presence of thousands of faithful Catholics from the diocese, close relatives of the ordaining priests, religious from various congregations, political authorities and pilgrims from all over the world who came to magnify the name of God.
The diocese is celebrating a double event, as this date also marks the 30th anniversary of the presbyteral ordination of Monsignor Dumas by Pope John Paul 2 in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome in 1991.
The list of priests in the diocese has just been swollen, with all 7 coming from the Saint-Marie Vianney class of the Notre Dame D’Haïti Seminary.
After several years of study, particularly in theology and philosophy, the suspense was long enough for the ordainers, but the church could not ignore the religious rituals imposed by canon law. The diocesan bishop, accompanied by some sixty priests, was visibly excited to proceed with the ordination of these new priests. The new priests were immediately appointed to various parishes as vicars. The letters appointing the new priests were read by the diocesan chancellor, Rev. Father Julien Almonacy.
The Rev. Père Guilner DUBRÉSIL, who was on probation at Notre Dame Perpétuelle secours parish in Chalon, has been appointed vicar of Saint Joseph de L’Asile parish, while the Rev. Père Pierre JEAN, former diaconate probationer at L’Asile, has been appointed vicar of St Joseph de Pemelle.
Père Moïse CARELUS has been appointed vicar of Saint Pierre de Baradères parish. Father Laurens Sténio RAYMOND, former intern at Notre Dame de la Guadalouppée parish in Paillant, was appointed vicar at Saint Antoine de Petite Rivière parish in Nippes on the day of his ordination.
Father Garry VOLCY, who was doing his diaconate internship in the parish of Saint Benoît de Dessources, has been appointed curate in the same parish. Father Dieunixson MERVILIER,
, who was doing his internship at Notre Dame de la Nativité parish in Petit trou, has been appointed vicar in Paillant, and finally, the new Father Gefthey JEAN, former diaconate intern at Sainte Anne Cathedral in Anse-à-Veau, has been appointed vicar at Sainte Anne Cathedral.
The Diocese of Anse-à-Veau, created on July 13, 2008, now comprises 71 priests for 39 parishes, according to the Bishop.
At the end of the ceremony, members of the Anse-a-Veau Tercentenary Committee, responsible for organizing the town’s 309th anniversary, awarded a plaque of honor to Monseigneur Dumas for his 30 years as a priest.
