No, the CPT does not have the full support of Washington!

Date:

The U.S. position, though akin to support for stability, conceals a more subtle message. Washington condemns the gangs and supports a multinational mission, but does not legitimize the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT).

Its rejection of violence to remove the CPT does not imply unconditional support for this body. This omission indicates that the international community regards the CPT as a perfectible transitional mechanism, leaving open the possibility of a political alternative.

The terms used suggest a willingness to modify current arrangements, favoring a negotiated and inclusive transition.
