Haiti’s diplomatic missions operate without financial support

For over four months, Haiti’s diplomatic missions have been operating without financial support from Port-au-Prince.

Ambassadors, consuls, and contracted staff across the Americas, Europe, and Asia have not received their salaries, sometimes forcing them to personally cover the rent for diplomatic buildings.

A diplomat, speaking under the condition of anonymity, stated: “I’m ashamed to face the landlord. I had to use my own funds to pay for what the Haitian state should have covered months ago.”

This financial paralysis comes as the de facto Prime Minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, claims to hold over $65 million in reserves, allegedly intended for a controversial referendum.

Meanwhile, substantial funds are reportedly being funneled toward corrupt political parties.

With missions abandoned and staff unpaid, the future of Haitian diplomacy raises serious concerns.
