Sogebank branch in Martissant vandalized

Date:

In a note published on Tuesday 22 June 2021, Sogebank officials confirmed that the Martissant branch had indeed been vandalized.

This branch has been closed since June 04 due to conflicts between rival gangs.

In the middle of the day on Monday June 22, bandits raided the sogebank premises. They even took the safe. After this act, they left in peace. For the moment, the authorities of this commercial bank are not in a position to assess the enormity of the damage, they said in the note.

Conflicts between armed gangs over territorial hegemony are forcing families to take refuge in a number of accommodation camps in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, including Place Fontamra, just a few metres from Martissant, and the Carrefour sports center. In the 3rd district of Port-au-Prince, the legal forces are absent, and it is the bandits who make and impose their laws.

While the authorities are powerless to pacify the area, the displaced live in inhuman conditions and do not know when they will finally be able to return home.

If Jovenel Moise hadn’t federated the armed gangs and politicized the national police force, we wouldn’t be in this unprecedented situation. According to many, Haiti is on the verge of somalization.
