Since his inauguration on March 7, 2025 as head of the Conseil présidentiel de transition (CPT), Fritz Alphonse Jean has inherited a country on the brink of collapse. Almost two months later, Haiti remains mired in a multidimensional crisis: omnipotent gangs, a phantom state and a bloodless population.
Has the arrival of Fritz Alphonse Jean given rise to false hope? If not the insignificance of Edgard Leblanc, nor the timid dynamism of Leslie Voltaire, with Fritz Jean it’s unproductive, lazy immobility.
The distrustful political class doubts its ability to break with the self-destructive cunning and chronic impotence of its leaders.
The initiatives announced – “rectifying the war budget”, reactivating the armed forces – are hard to convince. Perceived as window-dressing, they are reminiscent of past measures, often abused for repressive or clientelistic purposes.
The fear of counterproductive militarization, in a country marked by decades of state-sponsored violence, is palpable. The cohesion to be created within the CPT does not yet seem to be finding the desired leadership. The lack of consensus within the presidential institution, political rivalries and the urgent need for security make any progress more complex.
Without a clear plan or transparency, Monsieur Jean’s plans risk fostering distrust rather than stability. Calls for unity ring hollow without tangible action: disarming gangs, restoring essential services and driving inclusive institutional reform.
In the meantime, the population no longer lives by speeches, but by violence and hunger.
Fritz Alphonse Jean has three months and a few days left to turn things around. Will he be up to the national challenge of making a radical break with the past: reassuring the political sector, prioritizing dialogue with civil society, guaranteeing the independence of security actions and demonstrating unfailing integrity?
Haitian history is cruel when it comes to transitions, but each failure is a reminder of the urgency to succeed.
Fritz Jean must choose: embody bold change or add his name to the list of broken promises. A rendezvous with history that only a great man will know not to miss.
