Shops, schools and universities close to say no to insecurity

On social networks, notes are pouring in from private companies announcing their temporary closure. Faced with the resurgence of widespread insecurity in Haiti, these commercial enterprises are expressing their frustration. Numerous cases of kidnapping, rape and robbery have been recorded, and the State seems to be non-existent.

The Haitian people are overwhelmed by events. The police are powerless and armed gangs rule the roost. For months now, everything in the country has been moving at a snail’s pace. To protect themselves, the citizens, abandoned by their own leaders, have no choice but to resign themselves.

This Monday, April 14, 2021, some thirty companies announced their provisional closure for Thursday, April 15, 2021, an initiative supported in large headlines by Anadip. Universities, some of whose students have been kidnapped, will also be closed on April 15, 2021.

While high school students, to try to get teachers back into the classroom, marched through the streets of Port-au-Prince this week. Some were roughed up by police and others were tear-gassed.

Last Sunday’s kidnapping of clerics and members of their families has added fuel to the fire.

People were in total disarray when they heard about the incident at the “Chanje lavi” orphanage in Croix des Bourquet, where thugs killed a janitor and raped young girls.

The death of Thébaud added insult to injury this week. He is the umpteenth person to be killed in a kidnapping attempt in Port-au-Prince.

Despite all these calamities for the Haitian people, the referendum and elections remain the top priorities of its leaders.
