The bicentenary of the ordinance imposed by King Charles X suffers the same fate as that of national independence.

We must highlight Haiti’s missed opportunities to celebrate crucial historical moments, including the bicentenary of its independence in 2004 and that of the ordinance imposed by King Charles X.

The ordinance of April 17, 1825 forced Haiti to pay an exorbitant debt in exchange for a belated recognition of its independence.

Despite the importance of these two anniversaries, the country has failed to mobilize to demand justice and reparation in the face of historical injustice.

In 2004, the lack of unity and mobilization transformed this commemoration into a symbol of disunity.

Today, as April 17, 2025 approaches, no official activities are planned. We’re calling for a collective wake-up call.

We must also denounce the fact that France has still not apologized or returned the sums owed, even though recognition of this debt is essential for the dignity and justice of future generations.

Haiti must not repeat past mistakes.

We must come together to demand an official apology, reparations, and to reconcile the country with its history.

The fight for dignity and justice is a moral imperative.
